What Is Rabies and what Is the Purpose of the Vaccine? Rabies is a viral, zoonotic disease transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal—usually via bites or scratches—that infects the central nervous system, causing fatal brain disease. The rabies vaccine works as an active immunizing agent that protects humans and animals from the rabies virus.

How It Affects Humans? Rabies is dangerous because it is a zoonotic disease, which can spread from animals to humans. It affects the nervous system and can cause serious symptoms like confusion, paralysis, and difficulty swallowing. Without treatment before symptoms start, rabies is usually fatal, making it effectively incurable at that stage.

How It Spreads? Rabies spreads through the saliva of an infected animal, usually through bites or scratches. It can also spread if saliva gets into an open wound or the eyes, nose, or mouth. Animals like raccoons, bats, foxes, and skunks often carry it.

Who Needs the Vaccine? Pets like dogs and cats need the rabies vaccine to stay protected and help stop getting the disease. High risk individuals, such as veterinarians, animal workers, and others who are often around animals, are required to get the vaccine because they have a higher risk of exposure.

When does your dog or cat gets the vaccine? Rabies vaccine is given when pets are around 12-17 weeks old, yearly and then every 3 years. Vaccine is a killed virus dosed adequately to generate immunity.

How vaccine Benefits Society? The rabies vaccine benefits society by protecting both animals and people. It helps reduce the spread of rabies in communities, prevents human deaths, and supports public health. Vaccinating pets is one of the best ways to keep families and neighborhoods safe.
